What Is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription dermal filler injected into the facial muscles to temporarily improve the look of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Each Xeomin® injection contains botulinum toxin type A, which is a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. As with Dysport® and BOTOX®, Xeomin® is a type of botulinum toxin type A approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat wrinkles, such as the “11” lines between the eyebrows, as well as frown lines.

Xeomin® blocks the signs from nerves to muscles, causing the muscles to relax and smooth out. Xeomin® uses a purified form of neurotoxin, removing accessory proteins from the active ingredient. In addition to improving the appearance of glabellar lines, Xeomin® may also be used to treat excessive salivation and abnormal muscle contractions of the neck, eyelids, and limbs. How Does Xeomin® Work?

Xeomin® works similarly to BOTOX®, using the same mechanism (botulinum toxin type A), which blocks signals between the nerves and muscles, allowing the treated muscles to relax and, subsequently, the wrinkles to smooth out and reduce visible prominence. When we squint or frown, the muscles between our eyebrows contract, which causes our surrounding skin to fold and furrow. Over time, and as our skin ages, it loses some of its elasticity and resilience. These repeated facial contractions can result in persistent frown lines and wrinkles.

The active ingredient in Xeomin®, botulinum toxin type A, acts on nerve endings in the injected muscles to prevent muscle fibers from contracting. By reducing these contractions, Xeomin® temporarily reduces the lines between the eyebrows. Xeomin® Vs. BOTOX®

The primary ingredient in both Xeomin® and BOTOX® is a botulinum toxin type A, which treats glabellar lines, frown lines, or the “11” lines between the eyebrows. Xeomin® and BOTOX® work using the same mechanism, which blocks signals from nerves to muscles, prevents the muscles from contracting, and allows wrinkles to smooth out. The primary difference between Xeomin® and BOTOX® is that BOTOX® is formulated with an accompanying, inactive protein, while Xeomin® is not formulated with any additives.

Xeomin® is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, and it's manufactured in such a way that it removes accessory proteins from the active ingredient. Thus, the active ingredient contains only what is required to smooth frown lines with every injection, every time! Additional or accessory proteins are not necessary to the function of the injectable, making Xeomin® an excellent choice for patients seeking real clinical results, with the most streamlined formula available on the market. Benefits Of Xeomin®

There are several benefits to receiving injections of Xeomin®, including the following.

  • Smoothes the appearance of wrinkles between the eyebrows, around the eyes, in the forehead, or around the mouth.
  • Blocks signs from the nerves to the muscles, causing the muscles to relax and preventing further wrinkling.

  • Less likely to cause allergic reactions in patients due to the absence of added fillers in the pure formula.

Who Is A Good Candidate For Xeomin® Injections?

Xeomin® is widely considered safe for most patients. Xeomin® injections are a non-invasive procedure completed by our board-certified dermatologists. It is relatively quick; the preparation and injections take only minutes. As such, it is often called a “lunchtime procedure.”

At Gainesville Dermatology Aesthetic Center, our process begins with a consultation, during which we will review your problem areas, medical history, and skin and aesthetic goals. In most cases, the following criteria must be met to make patients eligible for treatments with Xeomin®. Before undergoing treatments, you will receive precise instructions for preparing for Xeomin® injections.

  • You should be in generally good health
  • At least 18 years of age
  • You have no known allergies or reactions to Xeomin® ingredients
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You do not have any pre-existing nerve or muscular disease

How Long Does Xeomin® Last?

If you are confirmed as a candidate for treatment with Xeomin®, you may schedule an appointment for your injection at your earliest convenience. The formulation is injected directly into the specific treatment areas during the procedure. After a few days, you will see improvements in your skin's appearance.

After two weeks, you can expect to see the complete wrinkle-busting effects of Xeomin®. The results from treatments with Xeomin® can last between 3–6 months. The longevity of the effects is similar to that of other treatments, such as BOTOX®. After three months, patients may consider scheduling another session to touch up the treated areas as needed.
