How Does JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC Work?

Each face has certain features that have an outsized influence on how old or young the person appears. One such area is the cheek apex, located below the corner of the eye. Early in life, the sharp angularity of the apex gives the face a youthful shape and vibrancy. However, age-related structural changes to fat, skin, and bones diminish the apex, flattening the cheeks and making the face appear older. This can also occur with other cheek areas, including the apple (beside the nose) and the hollow (near the corner of the mouth).

Juvéderm Voluma® XC fills and lifts flattened cheeks to restore their former position and features. The hyaluronic acid is injected just below the skin in critical areas of the midface. The physician then uses an artistic eye to mold the dermal filler to recreate a natural and symmetrical look. Compared to cosmetic facial surgery, these non-surgical injections are less invasive. Hyaluronic acid (the primary ingredient in the filler gel) is a complex sugar that occurs naturally in the body, so it’s perfectly safe for most patients.

It can also hold up for years in the body for long-lasting results. The injections are made with high-gauge — small and fine-tipped — needles with Vycross technology to ensure smooth and consistent application of the gel. The “XC” in Juvéderm Voluma® XC refers to lidocaine, a numbing agent, which briefly desensitizes the treated areas to reduce any discomfort or pain.

In addition to revitalizing the shape of the cheeks, Juvéderm® XC can help smooth moderate-to-severe skin folds and parentheses lines around the mouth and lips. It can be used as a standalone facial rejuvenation treatment or combined with BOTOX® cosmetic injections and other products. Consult our aesthetic professionals about which injections are best suited to your beauty goals and budget.

Are There Age Limits For Cheek Injections?

Our physicians only recommend cosmetic fillers to patients at an age in which benefits can be produced with treatment. Small amounts of fillers in younger patients may help them maintain their appearance as well as prevent early signs of aging or a tired appearance. Officially, however, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Juvéderm Voluma® XC for use in the cheek area of patients who are at least 21 years of age.

How Much Does JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC Cost?

When considering the costs of Juvéderm Voluma® XC, don’t think of this product as a traditional “wrinkle filler.” It’s actually a ground-breaking facial rejuvenation treatment that fulfills the roles of several injectables — lifting, tightening, filling. Additionally, Juvéderm Voluma® XC treatments typically require less hyaluronic acid than similar fillers to achieve comparable or better results. Patients with previous exposure to injectables tend to require fewer injections later. All of these factors contribute to long-term cost savings.

Each Juvéderm Voluma® XC treatment is individualized, which means the costs fluctuate based on the number of injections and the amount of filler used during each treatment. To receive an accurate estimate, schedule a consultation with our Gainesville dermatologists.

More About Juvéderm Voluma® XC

After receiving Juvéderm® injections, patients immediately notice the results. The cheeks appear fuller and lifted, while wrinkles around the nose and mouth tend to soften or disappear. Mild swelling or redness may occur at the injection sites, but most patients return to work or resume their normal social activities the same day. Contrast that with the days or weeks that plastic surgery patients must spend in recovery.

The aesthetic results from non-surgical facial injections depend on the patient’s skin health and facial features. Generally, patients with high-elasticity in their skin see the most dramatic restorations. Most patients are satisfied with the results from a single treatment, though some patients return for recurring injections for the optimal look.

Hyaluronic fillers are also recommended for first-time patients because, if the patient has second thoughts after receiving the injections, the results can be undone with a hyaluronidase injection. Though few patients elect for this, it’s a reassuring safety net.

In clinical studies performed by Allergan, the makers of Juvéderm® fillers, Juvéderm Voluma® XC was proven with optimal treatment to last up to two years in the cheek area. Clinical study participants also reported they looked up to five years younger just six months after treatment.

In the experience of our aestheticians, patients see the best results when they return for recurring injections as they feel the touch-ups are needed. For example, many patients return a few weeks after their first visits because they want more volume — as a rule, it’s better to be conservative with filler amounts; the physician can always add more — and then they return only every two years for re-injections.

Other patients might schedule injections routinely every certain number of months. It all depends on the patient’s beauty goals and whether their skin or figure has changed from aging, sun exposure, weight loss or -gain, or other factors. Follow-up injections generally require less gel and are less expensive than initial injections. This is particularly true for Juvéderm Voluma® XC users and makes dermal filler maintenance achievable.

One of the advantages of Juvéderm Voluma® XC is that it’s effective for practically all patients, regardless of their age, skin tone, or gender. That said, certain patients will receive different benefits from cheek injections.

Younger patients — that are 21 years of age or older — see the most dramatic results, mainly because they don’t have much laxity in their skin. Older patients, as well as those that have experienced rapid weight loss or have sun-damaged skin, may require larger filler amounts or to have the injections paired with other skincare treatments to achieve optimal results. Meanwhile, patients with a history of receiving filler treatments often experience positive results from smaller injections.

While patients with lighter skin tones tend to have more visible wrinkles than those with darker complexions, all people can lose cheek volume as they age. For restoring shape and contour to the midface, Juvéderm Voluma® XC works well for people with all skin tones. Cosmetic fillers can also be used on women and men. In general, full and angular cheeks are associated with a more feminine look. However, our aesthetic professionals can shape the cheeks to achieve a younger, more masculine appearance, as well.

Tell a physician about any allergies you have or medications you’ve been taking recently, as these could affect whether or not you’re a candidate for cheek injections. Specifically, patients with a history of severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, or an allergy to lidocaine or Gram-positive bacterial proteins should avoid Juvéderm Voluma® XC. Additionally, anyone who’s prone to scarring or has a pigmentation disorder should inform the physician ahead of time, as fillers could magnify the symptoms of these conditions. Immunosuppressive therapy could also heighten the chance of infection from injections, while using medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or blood thinners could lead to prolonged bleeding or increased bruising. For more pre-appointment advice, review our safety information.

Each Juvéderm Voluma® XC injection takes about 15 minutes to 20 minutes. The total treatment time can vary depending on the number of injections and the artistic complexity involved. For example, filling in parentheses wrinkles on the cheek hollow is a less involved process that sculpting all three areas of the cheeks.

Lidocaine in the filler prevents most discomfort from the injections. However, if a patient feels uncomfortable, an additional numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area. The numbness disappears quickly after the injections are made, and the patient is usually able to return to resume their normal day. For the first 24 hours after treatment, patients should avoid strenuous exercise and drinking alcohol and limit their exposure to sunlight.

Side effects with injectable fillers are usually mild. Patients may experience redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. Patients can treat their symptoms with an ice pack but should wait until several hours after surgery for the injection site to heal. Baby aspirin, fish oil, and blood thinners should also be avoided for several days to avoid making the bruising worse. If the side effects seem unusual for any reason, contact a physician for a medical review.

Some people look much younger or older than their age would suggest. Others have distinctive features that give their face personality. It takes an artistic eye to mesh the benefits of cosmetic fillers with the beauty goals and personal traits of patients.

At Gainesville Dermatology Aesthetic Center, our team of cosmetic professionals understand how to apply Juvéderm Voluma® XC to help patients achieve their desired results. When used optimally, a cheek filler can take years away from a person’s appearance and produce long-lasting results.

Offering cosmetic injectables isn’t enough. The physicians must also know how to use them to their fullest potential. At our aesthetic center in Gainesville, that’s precisely what we do. Contact us to schedule a consultation!
